CHAPTER THIRTEEN

My siblings were back and looked like they’d been in a vicious bar fight where they’d lost badly. Prue had gotten the worst of it. Both of her eyes were swollen and dark purple. She had oozing lacerations on her face and neck and was limping. Abby had a split lip, a bruised cheek and what looked like a broken arm. Rafe’s nose was broken. The dried blood all over his face and clothing made it appear far worse than it was. He had deep cuts on his knuckles, and he, too, was limping.

Their haunted expressions were concerning.

We sat at the kitchen table. Heather had insisted that they eat.

No one said a word. Not even Candy Vargo. Dirk tried to fuss on them, but they were having none of it. Tim had gone ashen when he saw them. He walked out of the kitchen and was sitting in the living room by himself. Their coldness and shitty attitude reminded me of when I’d first met them. They’d been God-awful, but they’d still been under Zadkiel’s control then.

They were no longer under Zadkiel’s control. I’d made sure of that. They had not had it easy, and it saddened me to see them in the state they were in. The only words spoken had been from Rafe when he asked where Amelia was. The answer satisfied him, and he went back to eating.

They ate fast and barely chewed. It was like they hadn’t seen food in a month.

Heather reloaded their plates and sat down. All eyes were on them. They ignored us.

When Abby went to lick her plate, I swiped it out of her hands and gave her a look. “Dude, you are not going to lick a plate. If you want more to eat, fine. But no licking.”

“I lick plates,” Candy Vargo volunteered.

Abby blanched. Candy wasn’t one of my siblings’ favorite people. In a mind-numbing situation that had happened hundreds of years before I was born, they’d had an altercation—and that was putting it mildly. They’d attacked Candy on the orders of Zadkiel. Candy Vargo was down both legs and both arms. So, she did what any batshit-crazy Immortal would do in that scenario… she ate them. Honestly, I hoped she was the only Immortal who would have chosen that route. If there were others, I didn’t want to know about it. Ever. She also crapped them out. The logistics were so freaking bad, I rarely, if ever, tried to work that one out in my head. Suffice it to say, they had a wary and somewhat friendly truce.

The upside was that if Candy licked plates, there was no way in hell Abby would do the same. One problem solved. A buttload more to go.

“Are you going to tell me where you were?” I asked.

Prue, Rafe and Abby exchanged glances.

Rafe shook his head. “It’s safer if we don’t.”

I didn’t like the sound of that and neither did Tory by the snort of disgust she made. Abby narrowed her eyes at the silver-haired Immortal and hissed.
